EXO is a unique case considering how the Sasaeng activities started almost right after their debut, and took place both in South Korea and China. So let us get to know the victims first:
Exo-K ('K' for Korean) for South Korea
Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun and Suho,
Exo-M ('M' for Mandarin) for China.
Chen, Lay, Xiumin, plus the former members Kris, Luhan and Tao
The first major chaotic fan behavior actually began overseas back in 2012, when EXO-M went to China for their promotions after wrapping up their Korean debut. The problem became apparent when the group arrived and entered the Beijing airport with only their staff to guard them. It could either be due to being a rookie group or being in a foreign land, but nobody was prepared to see the multitudes of fans who were already waiting to welcome them.
A Chinese fan was also reported to have snuck into EXO's waiting room that same year, wrote on the mirror "I love you Zhang Yixing" and then placed her love letters in Lay's bag.
Another incident highlighted the some of the new fans' confidence when a group of Chinese sasaengs sneaked up to the 21st floor of the hotel where EXO-M was staying and recorded Kris and Tao singing GDragon's Crayon in the shower.
Tao heard about the audio recording and shared his sentiments in his QQ acount:
These Chinese sasaengs apparently had their "leaders". An ex-Sasaeng posted in Baidu talked about these EXO twins (because it is said that wherever EXO-M is, you are bound to see these 3 girls as well) and apparently, all of them used to be university students who started skipping classes to follow their idols around. One is a fan of Chen, the second is a fan of Lay, and the last is Tao's fan. They participate in usual Sasaeng activities: waiting outside their dormitories and agency, sneaking into their apartment, renting a car to follow them easier, acquiring the group's schedule from journalists and etc."Do you think it's interesting to do this? Sometimes, when things go beyond a certain limit, it ends up being too much, you know? Do not overstep. I can ignore the past but things like these that are about me are too much. The next time I'll let you stay next to my door to record everything, is that what you want? Do what you should do if you like me, but do not go past the limit. If you don't like me then please stay away from me, I don't need you"
A group of Sasaengs grabbed and pushed Kai who was standing near the stairs. He fell off the terminal railing and some witnesses said he also hit the pillar, injuring his legs and waist. He attempted to stand, but realized that he couldn't walk by himself. Baekhyun approached to help him up, much to the annoyance of some fans who were trying to take photos of Kai. Amidst this chaos, Luhan also fell and hit a trolley and Lay was squeezed then hit a trash can
Tao then wrote on his Weibo in broken Korean asking fans to please stop because he doesn't want his members getting hurt anymore.
Later that year, EXO sasaeng fans made it to the news once again by gate-crashing Baekhyun’s brother’s wedding
"The wedding was quiet before the EXO members appeared. When three of them stood up to sing the congratulatory song, they rushed forward and stood on chairs to film videos. During the cake cutting, they ignored the couple since the idols were at the back, and were trying to get autographs and pictures. They didn't listen when the members told them to stop and they'll do it later. During the family photo, all of them mobbed together and took the picture. Thought it was a press event. Everyone else was getting angry and the couples' faces were getting darker."
One of his cousins shared his experience during the event:
"I was already there early but as people started arriving, young people i have never seen before appeared and disrupted us, stood there, sat on the chairs that were for guests. There was no reason for so many young people to be at this wedding so i asked if they were from the bride's family and they randomly asked, "did baekhyun arrive yet?" "when is he coming?" and such.
About 30 minutes before the ceremony, Baek and EXO arrived and I couldn't even ask how he was doing after not seeing him for one year. I was pushed here and there it was just crazy; and the lobby wasn't even a small place yet it was packed with people and at least half of them were following EXO and screaming or flashing their cameras. We eventually called the workers and sent them out, but for the 5-10 minutes they were there, they messed the place up and Baekhyun was apologizing to everybody
The bride heard the commotion and was shocked in the waiting room and Baek was speaking to her, I was next to them and he continuously apologized and looked very pitiful. It makes me mad although the ceremony went out like planned, I was still kind of upset."September, a sasaeng fan posted a disturbing message from her Daum account
“Baekhyun-ah, I told youIt involved the boys playing online games with female friends. Apparently it was a mortal sin and it was later rumored that the girls were members of the idol girl group, A Pink. It didn't help that Chen and A Pink's Bomi were reportedly dating during this time. As expected, some sasaengs managed to get hold of Suho's number to have their feeling heard.
Stop messing around, or we really don’t know what we’ll do next
Why do you think we went all the way there and caused a fuss?
Our puppy is so cute when he’s mad
But it’s time to tone down that kind personality right? You’re a public figure hehe
Try treating us like we’re insects one more time and we really don’t know what we’ll do next time
And send your brother our congratulations on his wedding~”
Suho: So are you trying to say you’re going to threaten me? What is it that you want?
Fan: I’m not threatening you. I won’t get into a lawsuit for releasing a three minute clip, right? I didn’t release the original.
Suho: What is it that you want?
Fan: What I want? I’m not threatening you, I don’t want anything. I just want to know that I won’t be sued. It’s not like I’m leaking a rumor.
Suho: Okay, I get it. Stop contacting me.
Fan: So you won’t sue me if I release everything?
Suho: It’s not the members from another group, just a non-celebrity friend I know so don’t bring harm onto others.
Fan: A Pink are not non-celebrities… There’s proof of you mentioning Bomi's name.
Suho: So what you’re saying is that you want to release it but you want to know whether you’ll get sued for it. That’s why you’re contacting me?
Fan: Yeah.
Suho: It’s not A Pink. ‘Bbeum’ is just that woman’s ID. Do not bring harm to another group. And if you’re that curious, ask me in court instead of through text.That same month, the League of Legends World Championship was underway, and pro gamer names climbed up into South Korea's search rankings. One name stood out for EXOLs: Filipino pro gamer Eric "Exo" Gubatan, a member of then-South East Asian LoL Champion, Mineski team. Hence, the fans started a petition to report this "disrespect" to have him change his player ID. Nothing came out of their campaign and netizens were annoyed at how these fans still managed to find something offensive in one of the world's biggest game tournaments.
That same month, a Kakaostory post became viral because the poster claimed to be an EXO fan who s broke into EXO-K’s dormitory and stole one of D.O’s boxer briefs.
"I am selling the underwear of Do Kyung Soo. I personally got it from their dorm. It was extremely hard for me to obtain. I am thinking it's worth ₩10,000. You don't believe me? There were a couple of hair strands on the underwear that you could test for DNA. I also have socks."
"I'm going to go next week to get Sehun's underwear if you want to reserve it. I could not get through EXO-M's thorough security. This item was something I was able to barely obtain. I'm selling hair strands, too."On February, EXO's pop-up shop “Boy Who Cried Wolf” (BWCW) closed down after a successful run. The last day proved to be quite busy with long lines and big purchases. Amidst everything, it was discovered that a fan managed to steal the signed, framed photo of EXO's Xiumin that wasn't even for sale.
On July 22, 2014, EXO′s Se Hun surprised knetizens when he posted a warning for a sasaeng fans on his personal Instagram account:
“This is the first and last time I will say this. Why is it that I receive so many text messages every single day when I haven’t done anything? Messages saying authorization number..password change..logged in with a different IP address... If you continue this ridiculous behavior, I will not stay put.”The next month didnt prove to easier when a sasaeng began telling everyone online that she is Se Hun's girlfriend. Prompting the idol to once again go to social media and posted and all black photo with the caption "Who are you? Do I really have to go this far.."
That same year, a fraud case came to light when it was discovered that the 21-year-old suspect called "Ms. Nam" was apparently an EXO sasaeng fan. She rented an expensive camera equipment and sold them online for 470,000 won, but failed to send the product. When asked on why she became a bogus seller, Nam explained how she needed extra funds to continue following her favorite group, EXO. One of her usual pastimes was to stay in a cafe near the group's dormitory all day long. It was said that she was kicked out of her parent's house, and was jobless since high school graduation.
2015 introduced the now-infamous Japanese sasaeng, Rion. A 99'er, this girl is rumored to be from a well-off family who started out as a master-nim for the Suho and Chen fansite called “Moncheri“. She was only 16 when she first began to act like a saesang. Despite being Japanese, Rion still had time to visit Korea for EXO as well as going to Manila for their concert. Apart from the usual stalking activities, Rion was notable for giving Suho a tissue with her kissmark. Later that year, it was discovered that Rion asked Suho to rape/sleep with her. After this incident, EXO-Ls becomes aggressive towards her whenever she is identified in later EXO events. Spraying water, blocking the entrance
On December 6, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Sehun and Suho were broadcasting live from Naver's V-App. Then it became apparent that Chanyeol kept receiving calls from an unknown number which he keeps on hanging up. A few minutes later, Sehun began to receiving calls as well which he rejects. Chanyeol then asked "Hey, is the number 5474?" Sehun confirms and Chanyeol reveals that it’s the same number who called him at the beginning of the V live.
To shrug off the uneasy feeling during that revelation, Suho joked about tracking the caller like they do in the movies.
November 2, 2015, EXO's Chanyeol took to Weibo to explain his dangerous vehicular encounter with Chinese sasaeng fans while he was in Shanghai.
He wrote:
"The reason I'm writing is because there was a very dangerous event that I experienced in Shanghai. After hesitating several times, I decided to write.
After I arrived in Shanghai, and left the airport and was entering the city, about 20 vehicles were continuously following the car I was in. These cars blocked the road, and changed lanes all in a row on the expressway to block our car. There was nearly a car accident several times. There were many cars that were parked on the road we used.
Those people interfered with an entire street's passage. I personally like China. During my schedule in Shanghai, I was able to meet a lot of people and I was so happy. But to have this kind of a dangerous thing happen on a superhighway is not right.
From now on, I hope you all will not hinder other people and will support us in a way where you can personally guarantee your own safety."
In 2016, the severity of sasaeng behavior was shown once again when they kept on calling EXO members during a V-app streaming event. Chanyeol and Sehun were busy chatting with EXO-Ls when it was observed that someone was calling Sehun every few minutes. Chanyeol suggested to put the phone to vibrate and Sehun angrily asked yelled at the caller to stop contacting him. It was all in vain though, since the calls kept on coming up until the end of the broadcast.
